A Constant Heart The War Diaries of Maud Russell 1938 1945 Emily Russell 9780992915186 Books
A Wonderful read, the author included family trees and full descriptions of who the persons in the diary were very helpful. The 30's to late 40's had a small society in England and Maud Russell was a truly remarkable lady and her contribution and caring attitude show through her diaries. The author is to be congratulated on this magnificent work.Product details

A Constant Heart The War Diaries of Maud Russell 1938 1945 Emily Russell 9780992915186 Books Reviews
Maud Russell’s WWII diaries are sensitively edited by her granddaughter Emily Russell into the resulting book ‘A Constant Heart.’ They make for compulsive reading and contain an extremely rich tapestry of anecdotes that refer to the movers and shakers in London at that time.
Maud’s husband Gilbert was the Duke of Bedford’s cousin, and she was a German heiress of Jewish descent. Having married in 1917, Maud and Gilbert mixed in the same milieu as many of the Bloomsbury set and also major political influencers of the day. Names such as Bonham-Carter, Churchill, Astor, Asquith, Sackville-West, Bell, Grant and many many more draw the reader in to an eye-witness account of political commentary of the day. Much of this took place during the weekend house parties at Maud’s country estate Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire (where Whistler was commissioned to paint an entire room), as well as at dinners and at the Admiralty where she worked during the war. She knew Ian Flemming extremely well, was painted by Matisse and built up her own art collection. I was gripped from the start as Maud tells the fuller story of World War Two, and how this affected all those who she came into contact with, and especially her family. She conveys both humour and sincerity, and despite her hectic social schedule Maud never looses sight of her priorities and loyalties to her family. Her descriptions of her marriage to Gilbert provide the most passionate and moving aspect to the diaries which are a very good read for anyone interested in the history of the era, both political and social.
